Things once thought important to the Heywood family -- whether to forgive a husband who made one slip, or how to resolve one’s financial woes -- suddenly become secondary to Jack (Andy Garcia) and his wife Alison (Frances O’Connor) when they receive word that their daughter Frankie (Daniella Byrne) has been hit by a car and is in the hospital.
Months later, Frankie has recovered from her physical injuries, but she is in a constant vegetative state. Witnessing the accident has traumatized her brother Ben (Harry Eden). His hair has lost its pigment and is now white, and he is acting irrationally under the burden of self-guilt, as he feels completely responsible for his sister’s condition.
Their only hope lies over four thousand miles away, at the Perlman Institute in the town of Banff, in the Canadian Rockie Mountains. Dr. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Chase (Angela Bassett), a driven and passionate woman, has devoted her adult life to bringing back children from comas with tremendous success.
What Lizzie doesn’t know is that Ben holds more than the key to bringing his sister back - he also holds the key for Lizzie to come to terms with herself, and with something in her past that has haunted her forever. The Last Door is an unforgettable testament to the power of love, hope, faith -- and the inexplicable magic of family.
