Sam (Matthew Shear) is a law school dropout, lacking direction in his life. When his aloof therapist, Fred (Judd Hirsch), offers him a job babysitting his three granddaughters, Sam is skeptical but soon agrees. Inexperienced and out of his depth, he finds himself in the midst of a tumultuous family dynamic. Fred's son David (Alessandro Nivola) and his wife, struggling actress Diane (Amanda Peet), have a strained relationship that only gets more complicated with the introduction of Sam.
As Sam and Diane continue to grow closer, they find themselves in a secret, simmering romance. When David is forced to leave on a work trip, Sam begins babysitting full-time, creating tension in their blooming relationship.
