Archangel, Guy Maddin's weird, wild melodrama of obsessive love is set in the northernmost tip of old Imperial Russia in the winter of 1919. The Great War has been over for three months, but no one has remembered to tell those who remain in the town of Archangel, an assortment of backward-gazing characters who grope about in the murk of their memories in a sad attempt to regain loves and comforts lost. Maddin's stunning black and white cinematography and memorably stylized set design make this a film quite unlike any other.
