Eddie Redmayne, star of The Danish Girl, talked gender with Tribute on the red carpet at TIFF 2015.

The Danish Girl is based on the true story of Lili Elbe (magnetic Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne), a transgender woman active in the 1920s Copenhagen arts scene.  Lili was born Einar Wegener, raised as a boy, and married Gerda, a talented painter (a shining Alicia Vikander).  After agreeing to pose in women's clothing for Gerda, Einar realized that a female identity was a better fit, and, with Gerda's support, took the name Lili Elbe and began to live fully as a woman. In the early 1930s, Lili was one of the first identifiable people to undergo sex reassignment surgeries, and Gerda and Lili's lives make for a complex love story.  The film (directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper) is based on the novel by David Ebershoff, which is in turn based on Lili's true story.
