The Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice won Best Motion Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards on Sunday evening, while Sebastian Stan won for Best Performance in a Leading Role, Drama.
The Apprentice's producer, Daniel Bekerman, took to the stage to give a speech that spoke of Trump, who threatened a lawsuit to remove it from circulation. "Our movie shows how the young Donald Trump amassed wealth and power by finding a dilapidated building and slapping his name on it," Bekerman said. "Now he wants to slap his name on this country. The most powerful person in the world tried to squish us, and they failed. They failed."
Cate Blanchett won Best Performance in a Leading Role, Comedy, for her work in the motion picture Rumours.
On the TV side, Andrew Phung won Best Lead Performer, Comedy for his comedy Run the Burbs, which was cancelled several months ago. It was the sixth CSA award in his career, and he was emotional as he accepted it, saying, "Today is our twentieth anniversary," while the camera pointed to his wife, Tamara Sharpe. "When I felt like I couldn't do anything, you made me believe that I could do everything. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much."
Best Reality/Competition Program or Series was won by Canada’s Drag Race. The Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award went to W Network's The Way Home.
The Radius Award for International Impact went to Manny Jacinto, who was raised in Richmond, British Columbia. He told the audience while accepting his award, “Who knew that applying to random auditions on Craigslist would end up here." Jacinto starred in the sitcom The Good Place and the 2024 Disney+ / Marvel series Star Wars: The Acolyte.
Best Comedy Series was won by the sitcom Children Ruin Everything, with actor Ennis Esmer winning Best Supporting Performer, Comedy.
Best Lead Performer in a Drama Series went to Supinder Wraich for her starring role in the crime drama Allegiance.
Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent took home the award for Best Drama Series.
The award for Best TV Movie was taken by Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, with Melanie Scrofano winning Best Lead Performer in a TV Movie for her performance. The film also won Best Writing, TV Movie for Emily Andras. ~Alexandra Heilbron
