The Madison offers gorgeous scenery, top-notch acting

The new series The Madison, debuting March 14 on Paramount+, stars Michelle PfeifferKurt Russell, and a host of other familiar faces, in addition to some newcomers. It tells the story of a family deeply attached to living in New York, while the father enjoys nothing more than visiting his brother at his cabin in the Madison River Valley of central Montana to get away, enjoy the beautiful countryside and do some fly fishing.

Kurt Russell plays Preston Clyburn, the country-loving patriarch, while Matthew Fox plays his younger brother Paul Clyburn, for whom a life far away from society is his paradise. Michelle Pfeiffer portrays Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch who has sustained a blissful marriage for 39 years.

While the series is a sweeping drama about a wealthy family, it also features bursts of action that catch viewers off guard -- some are quite humorous, like the hilarious outhouse scene that had the audience roaring during the two-episode premiere screening.

It's challenging to reveal more without spoiling surprises for first-time viewers. These surprises inject energy into a show that may seem slow-moving at times, but offers plenty for audiences to savor. Michelle Pfeiffer takes on her role with determination as the mother of two daughters and three granddaughters, teaching them valuable lessons with a firmness that sometimes shocks the pampered city girls.

Kevin Zegers plays Cade Harris, a ranch hand from a neighboring property. With a cowboy drawl and quiet warmth, his first appearance at the Montana cabin sends the younger girls running away. He brings supplies, handmade by the women at the ranch where he lives and unpacks them inside the cabin, giving details about each item of food. While the younger girls seem unappreciative, Stacy, clearly raised in a household that values manners, graciously apologizes and thanks him for the food, understanding that she are her family are in the middle of nowhere with limited supplies. After Cade leaves, she imparts a firm lesson in manners. Zegers, originally from Woodstock, Ontario, portrays Cade with calm sincerity, embodying the cowboy next door many women dream of. Hopefully we'll see more of him in future episodes.

The series is created by Oscar-winning writer Taylor Sheridan, who's also known for Yellowstone, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingston, 1923, 1888 and many more popular and current series. He excels not only in crafting a compelling screenplay but in showcasing the beauty of the landscape, which plays a significant role in The Madison. Many of the scenes are set outdoors, making it a visual treat.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
