Disney's new live-action remake -- The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as Ariel -- debuted in the top spot at the weekend box office, taking in $95.5 million, just short of the coveted $100 million mark.
Fast X starring Vin Diesel and Jason Momoa was pushed to second place after debuting last weekend at the top. The lastest film in the Fast & Furious franchise earned an additional $23 million for a two-week total of $108 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dropped a spot to third place. Having surpassed the $100 million mark during its first weekend and then achieving more than $200 million during its second weekend, the Marvel/Disney flick earned another $20 million for a four-week total of $299.4 million. In its eighth weekend in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. Movie slid to fourth place, earning an additional $6.3 million for an incredible total of $559 million.
Rounding out the top five was the action comedy film The Machine starring Bert Kreischer playing himself, and co-starring Mark Hamill. It debuted to the tune of $4.9 million at the domestic box office. ~Alexandra Heilbron
