The Apprentice begins in the 1970s with a young Donald Trump. He owns a rundown building where many of the tenants can't afford to pay rent. He has big ideas and dreams and wants more -- including building a magnificent, ritzy hotel on 42nd Street.
He takes a date to a restaurant known as a place that financiers tend to frequent but pays more attention to who's there than to his date. When she excuses herself and leaves the table, he decides to introduce himself to Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), a famous lawyer and political fixer, who takes a liking to the young Trump.
Cohn winds up taking the young man under his wing, teaching him how to be relentless, how to evade taxes and most importantly, "Claim victory, never admit defeat."
It's something Trump has become famous for, especially when it comes to politics. Watching Trump being molded by Cohn is fascinating, and eventually, the more he succeeds, the less he needs Cohn.
Sebastian Stan's portrayal of Trump is excellent. He's almost unrecognizable as he goes on a journey from a man who just wants to make something of his life to someone who lives his life through corruption and deceit -- and the movie doesn't even cover his political life, although there are hints that it's in his future. There's even a reference to "Make America Great Again" (MAGA).
We also see Trump fall for Ivana (Maria Bakalova), and doesn't take no for an answer -- even though she's with someone else.
The Apprentice is an interesting film that details how Trump was created by Cohn to become who he is today -- even though Cohn comes to realize that in helping Trump become a ruthless businessman, he may have inadvertently created a monster. ~Alexandra Heilbron
