Steven Spielberg said in an interview last Sunday that he regrets that his 1975 film Jaws and Peter Benchley's 1974 book it was based on, have decimated shark populations around the world.
Jaws created the myth that sharks were man-eating monsters, and sharks have been living with that image ever since. Peter Benchley, who wrote the original novel Jaws, later stated he wished he hadn’t written it. In fact, he spent the latter part of his life working to save sharks along with his wife Wendy Benchley, who is a global voice for protecting sharks.
He told BBC Radio 4: “I truly, and to this day, regret the decimation of the shark population because of the book and the film.” Click here to listen to the interview.
