It was a slow weekend at the box office as a lot of people decided to spend the Martin Luther King weekend in other ways.
One of Them Days took the number one spot at the box office over the three-day weekend. The R-rated comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA debuted to $11.6 million (three-day total). The film has received strong critical reviews, and with a reported budget of $14 million, it could leg out a nice profit for Sony.
In second place was Mufasa: The Lion King. Despite what some considered to be a disappointing opening, the Disney film has shown strong legs in the weeks following, as it grossed $11.5 million (three-day total) in its fifth weekend, a 19 per cent drop. The film's domestic total now sits at $205.8 million.
Leigh Whannell's latest creature feature Wolf Man opened in a disappointing third place this weekend. The film brought in $10.55 million (three-day total), which was significantly lower than Whannell's last film, 2020s The Invisible Man, which opened number one and brought in $28.2 million. With a reported budget of around $25 million, Wolf Man is not an automatic loss for Universal, but with a CinemaScore of C- it does not look like it will be reaching the heights of The Invisible Man.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 raced its way to fourth place. In its fifth week of release, the film tallied an additional $8.6 million (three-day total), which was a 30 per cent drop. The film's domestic total of $216.5 million is the highest in the franchise.
Last week's winner, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, fell to fifth place in its second weekend. The film fell 56 per cent and brought in another $6.6 million (three-day total). The film's domestic total is now up to $26.1 million, which puts it just behind its 2018 predecessor through the first two weeks.
