No Hard Feelings is hilarious and heartwarming: movie review

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Jun 22, 2023

Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman in No Hard FeelingsFrom the moment No Hard Feelings begins, Jennifer Lawrence captures the audience with her comedic skills. Because her character Maddie hasn't paid her property taxes, her car is being repossessed. That would be bad enough for anyone, but Maddie, who's seriously behind in paying all her bills, makes the bulk of her income as an Uber driver.

She manages to get to her bartending job on roller blades, where her pregnant best friend -- hilariously played by Natalie Morales -- tries to help her out by looking through the ads for opportunities for Maddie. She finds one -- the wealthy parents of an awkward 19-year-old son about to go to Princeton in the fall are looking for an attractive woman in her early twenties to "date" him in exchange for a car.

Maddie, 32, is ambivalent -- but her desire to hold onto her childhood home in Montauk finally wins out and she contacts the parents. It's clear they want her to seduce their introverted son, Percy, who has no friends and only leaves the house to help out at an animal shelter.

The trailers for this movie are restricted, so I expected this to be somewhat raunchy, but what actually transpires is far more hilarious and sweet than I'd imagined. Jennifer Lawrence brings so much sass and physical comedy to her character -- she definitely proves her worth as a top box office earner. Percy, played by Andrew Barth Feldman, who's best known for playing the title role in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, brings a lot more depth to his character than the typical teenage boy we see in comedies about guys hoping to lose their virginity.

In particular, Maddie and Percy's first meeting is laugh-out-loud hilarious and the laughs only grow from there. The storyline doesn't go in an expected way -- it takes twists and turns that you won't see coming. It's rare to find a movie this entertaining, funny, and heartwarming all in one. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Nailed it!!! I have never been a fan of Jennifer Lawrence and I'm not big on comedies either. Having said that however, this movie is fabulous, & it has made me a fan of Jennifer Lawrence. I mean the writing has to be good, but it was and she executed her part so well. I loved it from the moment it started. The music was great. The Atlantic Ocean is a star and it was fun and I laughed the whole way through. I highly recommend seeing it. Original and fun. And isn't that what movies should be about?
