Following in the footsteps of past box office rivalries such as Barbenheimer, when two huge movies (Barbie and Oppenheimer) opened on the same weekend, making it difficult for movie fans to choose which one to see first, comes Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Disney's live-action remake of the beloved animated classic, Lilo & Stitch. The competition for box office supremacy is being dubbed "Stitchpossible," and both films are currently in close contention.
Each film received positive critical reviews, with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning boasting a rating of 80 percent on RottenTomatoes.com, while Lilo & Stitch earned a strong 74 percent rating, marking it as one of the highest scores for a Disney live-action remake.
Early box office predictions suggest the two movies combined could achieve a record-breaking total during the Memorial Day weekend in the U.S., with an anticipated global start of $485 million -- $275 million for Lilo & Stitch and $210 million for Mission: Impossible - The FinalReckoning. Domestically, Lilo & Stitch is projected to earn between $120 and $140 million, while Mission: Impossible is estimated to bring in around $80 million.
Courtney B. Vance, who portrays CIA agent Cobra Bubbles in Lilo & Stitch and whose wife, Angela Bassett, stars as Erika Sloane alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, quipped on the red carpet to The Hollywood Reporter, "Tom, how are you gonna do bro? I don't think you can compete with Stitch, Tom, but you're gonna give it your best shot."
