Meryl Streep wants to step back on the stage, this time alongside rumored boyfriend Martin Short.
While appearing on the radio show Andy Cohen Live alongside her The Devil Wears Prada 2 costars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, Meryl, 76, opened up about a potential future collaboration with her Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short. When the host asked if she would ever return to Broadway — a stage she last worked on in the 1970s — Meryl didn’t hesitate, saying, “Oh, I would love to do so. I was talking with Marty Short about that.” She added, “We were thinking that would be fun to do something together.”
Meryl and Martin portray on-screen lovers in Only Murders in the Building since she joined the series in Season 3. In late 2023, their on-screen chemistry and off-screen rapport sparked speculation about a possible real-life romance, which surfaced around the same time it was revealed that the mother of four had quietly separated from her husband, Don Gummer, six years earlier.
While the pair have never confirmed a relationship, they were seen holding hands at the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 premiere in August 2024. In the months that followed, they were also spotted getting cozy away from the cameras by several fans, adding to ongoing speculation as they continued to appear together on multiple occasions, though neither has ever confirmed whether they’re dating or simply close friends.
Last summer, Martin admitted he felt unusually nervous before filming alongside the actress. He recalled driving to the studio on his first day working with her and realizing he hadn’t felt that kind of pre-shoot anxiety in a long time.
“Of course I was nervous,” he added warmly. “It’s Meryl Streep.”
Meryl has been a source of support for the Canadian star following the death of his daughter, Katherine, who died by suicide in February at age 42. Katherine, who had struggled with mental health issues, was adopted by the actor and his late wife, who died of cancer in 2010.
