James Gunn has revealed the name of his follow-up to the hit film Superman -- it's Man of Tomorrow. He announced the news on Instagram, posting an illustration by DC head Jim Lee that shows Lex Luthor with Superman amicably leaning against him, holding a screwdriver. The announcement gave the date of the next installment as July 9, 2027.
The green and purple armored mech suit Luthor is wearing has been seen before in comics and animation, but this will be the first time it appears in a live-action movie.
Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter, "I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.' I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today."
Superman was a huge hit with critics, receiving an 83 percent positive rating at RottenTomatoes.com. It enjoyed an incredible box office opening of over $125 million, which led to over $352 million at the domestic box office and a total of $611.6 million worldwide. The sequel will find David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult returning to their starring roles as Superman and Lex Luthor.
If 2027 seems like too long to wait, then you'll be happy to hear DC is releasing Supergirl starring Milly Alcock (who was seen at the end of Superman in a brief glimpse in which she picked up Krypto, and she also played a starring role in the 2025 Netflix series Sirens, alongside Julianne Moore and Meghann Fahy) on June 26, 2026. ~Alexandra Heilbron
