James Caan, the legendary actor best known for his work as Sonny Corleone in the Godfather films, has died at the age of 82.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” read a statement posted on Twitter. It continued, "The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time." No cause has been revealed to the public.
Caan spent over six decades in the entertainment business, starring in such films as El Dorado with John Wayne, the Stephen King adaptation Misery with Kathy Bates, and the Christmas film Elf with Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel. His most famous role was as the eldest son of mafia don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II.
Friends and co-stars of Caan were quick to send their condolences over Twitter.
"I’m so sorry to hear about Jimmy. He was so talented." Barbra Streisand tweeted alongside a photograph of the two together. Others such as Adam Sandler, John Cusack, and Rob Reiner, also tweeted tributes to the late actor.
Caan was married and divorced four times and is survived by his five children; Scott Caan, James Caan, Tara Caan, Jacob Caan, and Alexander Caan. ~Megan Parsons
