Karla Sofía Gascón to attend Oscars despite controversy

Transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia PérezKarla Sofía Gascón will be attending this weekend's Oscars after the controversy surrounding the resurfacing of her offensive social media posts.

Gascón, who is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Netflix's Emilia Pérez, will be in the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. In addition, according to sources from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Netflix is expected to fully cover her travel costs — which is customary for studios.

Gascón is the first openly trans woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category but has been keeping a low profile since the resurfacing of her posts. Despite being nominated for a Critics Choice, BAFTA, and a SAG award, Gascón was notably absent from the ceremonies.

Gascón had been enjoying a very successful awards season, which culminated in her Best Actress nomination — one of 13 Oscar nominations for Emilia Pérez, which leads all films. That all changed when old tweets emerged in late January that expressed Gascón's opinions on topics such as Islam and Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. She has since apologized and stepped back from the campaign, hoping that her "silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is."

A report from Variety stated that there are still details about her plans that have yet to be finalized. This includes whether she will walk the red carpet, stop for interviews, or sit near her co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, and director Jacques Audiard.

The Oscars air this Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, with Conan O'Brien set to host. The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, with the red-carpet coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. ~Ryan Donahue
