James McAvoy was at a bar by the name of Charlotte's Room in Toronto on Monday evening with the producers of his new film, California Schemin', when a stranger who was clearly inebriated walked up to him from behind and punched him. McAvoy, who was not hurt, laughed it off and remained at the bar after the man was quickly escorted out by security.
Charlotte's Room is just two blocks from the TIFF Bell Lightbox on King Street West, the festival's headquarters.
The Scottish actor/director is in Toronto with his wife Lisa Liberati for the Toronto International Film Festival, where his directorial debut premiered on Saturday night. California Schemin' is about two Scottish men who pretend to be American in an attempt to achieve their dreams of hip-hop stardom. McAvoy plays a music producer in the film.
TIFF runs until Sunday, September 14, 2025, when the name of the People's Choice Award winner will be released. ~Alexandra Heilbron
