James McAvoy attacked by drunk at Toronto Film Festival!

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Sep 10, 2025

James McAvoyJames McAvoy was at a bar by the name of Charlotte's Room in Toronto on Monday evening with the producers of his new film, California Schemin', when a stranger who was clearly inebriated walked up to him from behind and punched him. McAvoy, who was not hurt, laughed it off and remained at the bar after the man was quickly escorted out by security.

Charlotte's Room is just two blocks from the TIFF Bell Lightbox on King Street West, the festival's headquarters.

The Scottish actor/director is in Toronto with his wife Lisa Liberati for the Toronto International Film Festival, where his directorial debut premiered on Saturday night. California Schemin' is about two Scottish men who pretend to be American in an attempt to achieve their dreams of hip-hop stardom. McAvoy plays a music producer in the film.

TIFF runs until Sunday, September 14, 2025, when the name of the People's Choice Award winner will be released. ~Alexandra Heilbron

That must have been a drunk American visiting TIFF.

  2. Patrick • 9/11/2025 1:04:42 PM

Oh my, I hope James realizes Canadians are not usually ones to just attack for no reason. The film sounds fun.

In answer to Patrick’s reply….where have you been Patrick??? Crime in Canada..particularly in Toronto…is through the roof. Random shootings…rape…random attacks on the elderly. You are either very naive or from Toronto where no one seems aware of what a dangerous city Toronto is. OPEN YOuR EYES Patrick.

Oh for pity's sake. Yeah right, MA. No random drunk has ever tried to start a bar fight by punching a random stranger in the history of the world. It's all the Liberals' fault, amirite? Or maybe do drunks in every time and place have a bit of a habit of starting fights with strangers in bars. Do you think? Please. Get pissy Pierre to promise to end all bar fights everywhere. Maybe by making a law that we are all required to tote guns wherever we go. That'll deter the belligerant bellicose drunks. Or so said Heinlein, amirite again? Nothing like a lecturing right-winger. Everybody should open their eyes! do their research! yada yada! Actually, life would be so much nicer if you shut something tfu. cont'd

Because no one should be tolerated when they spread disinformation on platforms like this. It seems I may not be allowed to post links, but the info is easily traced at statscan. Anybody who wants to know actual truth about crime in Canada, and not right-wing talking points and, er, disinformation, really is welcome to do their own research. It's very easy. Crime Severity Index- Canada (2024) 77.9 ... -4.1% (decrease) Police-reported crime rate per 100,000 population- Canada (2024) 5,672 ... -3.6% (decrease) 2023 & 2024 homicide numbers (796; 798) way down from 2021 & 2022 (801; 885) in spite of population increases.

Open your goddamn eyes, "Bushwah". Canada is much more dangerous than it used to be and it's because of the Liberals soft on crime policies.

A fine specimen of an uncouth right-wing liar. My eyes are open and have been for at least twice as long as a creepy little creep like you has been alive. Shut your mouth. We're done here.

Crime in Canada has been increasing. Activists judges repeatedly setting criminals free. Junkies shooting up in public. Children stabbing seniors to death. Toddlers molested in their homes. Men "identifying" as women so they can be sent to women's prisons to rape the female convicts. Despicable child killers sent to so-called healing lodges. Terrorists being set free on "peace bonds". Child killers getting taps on the wrists. But if you're outraged by any of this, you're a "right-wing creep". Yeah, keep voting Liberal.

I am old enough to remember when Canada was a safe place. Anybody who claims Canada has become safer is denying reality, plain and simple.

Yes, crime has gone back up under the Liberals, a little, and needs a stronger stance to address. Your whiny hyperbole doesn't highlight anything informative, other than the fact that you act as a child. So maybe, grow up and act like an adult. Crime has been around for thousands of years, it didn't just magically appear under the last 10 years of a liberal government. Crime is FAR lower now than when it peaked in the early 90's under conservative rule, but you folks are too juvenile to understand or care about this fact, so you just whine whine whine in a completely uninformed tantrum. I'm sure your favourite fascist hero will save the world and fix everything with his magic perfection, blah blah blah.

    Talk about projection

    Take your meds, Paul.

  13. Pat • 9/15/2025 7:59:41 AM

What a shameful and embarrassing rant by Paul. Don't be a blind partisan, kids. It'll turn you into a spastic imbecile like Paul.

Right-wing parrots are soooo polite. Ha ha. Actually, what a mob of unpleasant... characters. Unpleasant, dishonest, just plain nasty. Just like their nasty boss. In fact, their agenda is transparent and their claims are all lies, as they know just as well as we decent, honest, reasonable, intelligent people do. Because the thing is, the only way they can advance their ugly, hateful agenda is by lying. Too bad they aren't better at it, eh? Brawk. Axe the tax. Hang 'em high. Shoot the drunks. Kill medicare. Burn the constitution. Brawk!!! BTW, I'm not a Liberal and have not been a Liberal for over 50 years. The first vote I managed to cast (after Liberal skullduggery left students off the list in 1972) was against Trudeau Sr, whom I didn't trust as far as I could spit. I'm probably the only one here who remembers "wage and price" [sic] controls. And I was right. So you can all take your obnoxious and very very stupid attempts at insult and eat them with some nice Canadian dairy products.

Such lies and outright gaslighting from the blind Liberal defenders who have allowed partisanship to supplant their moral sense, if they had any moral sense to begin with (which is doubtful)

Bushwah/Paul Galbraith: you are suffering severe psychological problems. For your own good and the good of those around you please seek help at once.

    One word: LOSERS.
