Independence Day: Resurgence second official trailer released

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Apr 22, 2016

It's been 20 years since the movie Independence Day released. In the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, it's also been 20 years since the aliens attacked and tried to destroy Earth. This time around, Liam Hemsworth joins the cast as fighter pilot Jake Morrison, while Maika Monroe plays the daughter of President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who was instrumental in fending off the attack 20 years earlier.

On July 4, 2016, President Lanford (Sela Ward) makes a speech at a stadium to thousands of people in order to celebrate their survival and commemorate the brave souls who lost their lives all those years ago. She tells them they have used technology to build a stronger, safer Earth.

However, Earth Space Defense Director David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) witnesses something distressing via a video link from outer space. The aliens are coming back to Earth for another attack. There's mass destruction as buildings fly up in the air, only to come hurtling back to Earth. Tidal waves are formed in the Atlantic Ocean, crashing down over ships and capsizing them.

Levinson questions himself, saying he had years to prepare for this moment -- however, he feels they don't have a chance. President Lanford reminds him that they didn't have a chance in 1996, either, but they still prevailed.

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters June 24, 2016.
