As the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike continues, several movies are getting delayed release dates, including Beetlejuice 2, which stars Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder.
Insiders had hoped that the strike would be resolved by mid-October, but that deadline has passed. Other major releases that will be delayed are Dune: Part Two, Kraven the Hunter and the untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, which were scheduled to hit theaters in the final months of 2023, but have been pushed to 2024. That's because due to the strike, actors can't do press or appear at premieres, according to SAG-AFTRA union rules.
When the writers' strike ended in late September, it was hoped that the actors' strike would be settled soon after, but so far talks haven't produced any results.
Although Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour drew audiences to movie theaters, generating $180 million worldwide, B. Riley senior media analyst Eric Wold told Variety.com: “Taylor Swift wasn’t enough to offset the movies that moved.” However, he added that the fourth quarter has enough movies to keep cinemas busy, saying: "It’s a decent mix of superheroes, young adult content and nostalgia to drive audiences."
Opening later this year are the blockbusters The Marvels (November 10), Wonka (December 15), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 20) and the musical The Color Purple (December 25), as well as another concert film, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, which will hit theaters December 1st.
