The new Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch, opened at the top of the box office, debuting with an exceptional take of $185 million, making it the biggest debut of 2022 so far. It's also Marvel's third highest non-Avengers debut, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260M) and Black Panther ($202M).
After topping the box office for two weeks, the animated movie The Bad Guys dropped to second place this weekend, pulling in an additional $9.8 million for a three-week total of $57.6 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starring Jim Carrey and James Marsden held onto third place for another weekend, earning an additional $6.2 million for a five-week total of $169.9 million.
Also retaining its spot from last weekend was Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. It took in an extra $3.95 million for a total of $86 million.
Rounding out the top five was Everything Everywhere All at Once, which earned an additional $3.3 million this weekend for a seven-week total of $41.6 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
