Channing Tatum as a charming crook in Roofman - film review

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Oct 10, 2025

Roofman is a highly entertaining movie based on the exploits of Jeffrey Manchester, played by Channing Tatum. Unable to find a job after serving in the military, his army friend Steve (LaKeith Stanfield) suggests he put his observational skills to use. He does, and studies the routines of the staff at McDonald’s restaurants.

Knowing exactly which day the money goes to the bank, he waits until the safe is full, then cuts a hole in the roof, waits for the employees to get in to access the safe, locks them in the freezer, and calls 911 so they won’t be in there too long. He even gives his warm coat to a manager who doesn’t have one.

Jeffrey wants to impress his ex-wife and kids, especially his daughter, who’s about 11. When her birthday comes around, he’s unable to buy her the bike she wants, but after robbing 45 McDonald’s, on her next birthday, he’s not only able to give her the bike of her dreams, but he has a big house and a nice car. The problem is, he finally gets caught and is unable to contact his family from jail.

Channing Tatum is charming and funny as Manchester, even if LaKeith Stanfield steals all the scenes they share together. Tatum’s scenes with Kirsten Dunst as Leigh, a divorced woman with two daughters, allow time for their relationship to build, and it’s heartwarming, especially as he eventually wins over her daughters as well.

The problem is he’s too nice of a guy, and each time, he listens to his heart instead of his head.

However, it makes for a very interesting story and a great night out at the movies. Stay during the credits to see interviews with the real-life people behind the true story.  ~Alexandra Heilbron
