The film has also passed the $1 billion mark worldwide, the second movie to do so this year -- only The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned more. With just one new wide release last Friday, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, continues to dominate.

Climbing back up to second was Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, which in the film’s third weekend earned another $18.8 million, bringing the total earnings to $264.3 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem also climbed up a spot, to land in third place. The newest addition to the franchise took in $15.8 million for a two-week total of $72.8 million.

Dropping two spots to fourth was the horror film Meg 2: The Trench starring Jason Statham. The second installment in the franchise earned an additional $12.7 million for a two-week total of $54.1 million.

Rounding out the top five was the only new wide release -- the chilling horror film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on one chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Starring Corey Hawkins, it took in $6.5 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
