From the O.J. Simpson trial to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, American Crime Story is known for exploring high-profile cases and transformative events. With the announcement that the series will chronicle the shocking murder of Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, that trend doesn't appear to be changing.
Deadline reports that Ryan Murphy's anthology series has been renewed by FX for a third season, which will detail the July 1997 assassination of iconic designer Gianni Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion. The perpetrator was sociopath Andrew Cunanan, who killed himself aboard a houseboat eight days later. His motive for murdering Gianni was never uncovered.
Gianni was Andrew's fifth and final victim.
The third season will be titled Versace/Cunanan and will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. It will begin shooting next spring, with Ryan set to direct the first episode.
According to Deadline's story, producers of the series are currently meeting with actors to portray the two lead roles, while an A-list actress is in negotiations to play the part of Gianni's sister Donatella.
The first season of American Crime Story -- The People v. O.J. Simpson -- was a standout, dominating the Emmys with 10 wins in September.
The second season of the anthology series will be based on Douglas Brinkley's book The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Titled Katrina, it's set to begin filming in early 2017.

How is Hurricane Katrina a crime? I mean, it's criminal what happened, but it's not a murder mystery is it? Why don't they do what happened to JonBenet? It's never been solved and it's about time it got solved.

Cunanan's murder spree was brief. Was he a serial killer or was he technically a mass murderer?
Serial killer, he murdered them all on different dates. Some of them just because he needed something they had, kind of a wrong time and place thing.

Agreed that Katrina was not a crime. As well, it struck me that G Versace's killer was not technically a serial killer, it was more of a crime spree. However, I will be watching with great interest. As far a JonBenet goes , that crime was never solved..not yet.
