Rebellious teens Abby (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) skip classes, get high, and listen to their music through on their headphones, unaware that their parents are planning to get their behavior under control by involuntarily admitting them to a correctional school.
Meanwhile, detective Alex Dempsey (Mae Martin) arrives in the town of Tall Pines with their wife Laura (Sarah Gadon), who grew up there and feels drawn to return in her final months of pregnancy. The small town, where everyone is friendly knows you by name, gives her comfort, but Alex is slow to warm to small town life, finding it jarring at first.
Alex meets Evelyn (Toni Collette), the headmistress of the local correctional school, who appears to be friendly and caring, but whose connection to Laura raises red flags. When a teen escapes the facility, the sinister underbelly of the school is exposed, bringing Alex, Laura, Abby, and Leila together under dire circumstances.
