In 1972, a young coast guard officer Fielding Pierce (Crudup) is passionately drawn to Sarah
Williams (Connelly), an idealistic activist. She becomes his great love. But, after two years of
bliss, fate brutally cleaves their futures: Sarah is murdered in a car-bombing.
Ten years later, Fielding, now a lawyer, has just thrown his hat in the ring for an upcoming
Congressional election. Suddenly he is haunted by the memory of Sarah. And not just
figuratively but literally: he's seeing apparitions of Sarah everywhere.
Fielding's sister, Caroline Pierce (McTeer), lends personal and professional support, but
his life is beginning to unravel. Is Fielding losing his sanity, or is Sarah still alive?
The film is based on a novel by Scott Spencer.
