Former San Francisco police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart) has been forced into early retirement after being diagnosed with vertigo and clinical depression.
He becomes a private detective, and is hired to investigate the strange activities of an old friend's wife, Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak), but becomes dangerously obsessed with her.
