Christophe, a playwright, is limited to writing dark tragedies that nobody will see. Struggling to raise funds for his new project, he learns that a former friend, Jean-Luc, has managed to land a grant for his new theatrical creation. When Christophe asks for his help, Jean-Luc invites him to the country to meet his future wife.
On the way, Christophe and his actress wife Patricia have an argument, because she suspects him of infidelity. Upon arrival, Patricia refuses to utter a single word. So much so that their hosts come to believe she is of foreign origin. Seeing this as a means of getting back at Christophe, Patricia lets them believe she comes from Chouvénie and doesn’t speak French. A series of misunderstandings follows.
