Wanting to be alone, Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) walks nearly 2,000 miles from the remote northern outpost of Alice Springs across the deserts of West Australia to the Indian Ocean, with only four hard-earned camels and her faithful dog, Diggity, for company.
She grudgingly agrees to allow American photographer Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) to drive out to meet her at several points to take pictures — a condition of her contract with National Geographic magazine, which is financing her trip.
