In 1971 France, the farmers of Larzac lived a quiet life caring for their farms and their sheep. Michel Debré, at that time the defense minister, announced that the French army would expand its military camp in the region, encroaching on the lands of the inhabitants. The citizens of Larzac boldly challenged the decision. They were soon joined by activists from all over. For ten years until François Mitterrand's election in 1981, their unrelenting battle would have profound implications.
