In a village in Provence in the late 1930s, Patricia Amoretti falls in love with Jacques Mazel, the son of the wealthy general store owner. This romance doesn't go over well with her father, Pascal. The widowed well digger would prefer to give her hand in marriage to his shy employee Felipe, who's in his forties. When war breaks out, Jacques, a pilot, leaves for the front, without having the opportunity to say goodbye to his beloved. Even worsehis mother goes back on her promise to deliver the letter her son wrote to Patricia, because she's also opposed to this union. But on the day Felipe proposes to her, Patricia finds out she's pregnant with Jacques' baby. Meanwhile, Jacques has gone missing during a mission. Not only do his parents refuse to recognize the unborn baby as his, but Pascal turns his back on his daughter, who has to find refuge with an aunt.
