The Unbreakable Boy - True Story

The LeRette Family

The LeRette family is living together in Nebraska. Scott and his wife Teresa are the parents of their two sons, Austin and Logan. Scott and Teresa had Austin before the two were married, which Scott jokes about — the lack of familiarity between the two. Austin has been diagnosed with autism and Osteogenesis Imperfecta, otherwise known as Brittle Bone Disease.

Austin shows the same interests as any other child, including his love for pizza, movies and dancing. He also has an extensive collection of crazy hats.

Despite Austin's joyful outlook on life, there have been dark times for the family. When Austin was younger, Scott accidentally broke his back. Scott has also struggled with alcoholism, culminating in the moment when he almost killed his two sons while Teresa, who also has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, tried to take her own life.

Due to the nature of Austin's physical health, trips to the hospital were a common occurrence for the family. One time, having just come back home from getting a cast off, Austin tripped and broke a bone in his lower leg/ankle region. While at the hospital, the family overheard doctors and nurses talking about them. It was Scott's brother, Kevin, who suggested that he start documenting these experiences.

Those notes started off as something just for Scott but eventually evolved into him starting a blog. The blog began to gain viewers who would leave comments expressing their emotional reactions to Scott’s stories. This would eventually lead to Scott writing a book.

The story of this family is documented in the memoir from Scott and New York Times best-seller Susy Flory titled The Unbreakable Boy: A Father's Fear, a Son’s Courage, and a Story of Unconditional Love. The book was released in 2014 and documents the family's peaks and valleys, from Austin's joyful outlook amidst all the obstacles thrown his way to the struggles of his parents in raising him.

In 2020, Lionsgate announced a feature-length film titled The Unbreakable Boy based on the book, starring Zachary Levi as Scott and Jacob Laval as Austin. The film is set to release on February 21, 2025. ~Ryan Donahue
