In 1998 Kabul, shortly after the Taliban have come to power, Mohsen and Zunaira are newlyweds who hope that one day they’ll be able to escape and live in freedom. Meanwhile, middle-aged prison warden Atiq watches over his wife Mussarat, who is suffering from terminal cancer. When Mohsen commits a foolish act that leads to his accidental death, Zunaira is arrested for murder and incarcerated in the prison run by Atiq. The young widow is condemned to death without a trial, during a ceremony preceding the next soccer match in the city stadium. Touched by the unfair fate of his new prisoner, Atiq undertakes to help her, at the risk of alienating his Taliban colleagues.
