In the summer of 1944, Penny and Baby, two newly orphaned young girls, go to live with their Aunt Katchen and her husband Wilhelm, a Jewish intellectual who, despite the war and the fascism of the time, is extremely respected in their village.
Warmly greeted upon their arrival, the two girls adapt well to their new environment, especially when Penny, who at first didn't like Wilhelm because of her father's fascist influence on her, comes to understand her uncle's brusque affection.
But when Nazi soldiers situate themselves in the village and Wilhelm refuses to hide, events take a tragic turn.
