Boston detective Frank Shaw (Joel Kinnaman) is seriously injured on duty when he's hit by a car. Afterwards, he has to wear hearing aids and is told by the doctor that he'll eventually be completely deaf.
When his former partner (Mark Strong) asks him to act as a sign language interpreter for a deaf witness (Sandra Mae Frank) to a brutal gang murder, he reluctantly agrees, even though he's still learning to sign. She lives in a soon-to-be-condemned apartment building and after questioning her, they leave. As Frank is driving away, he realizes he left his phone in the apartment, but upon arrival, he finds that she's in danger.
