When famed photographer Christina Eames unexpectedly dies, her estranged daughter Mae Morton (Issa Rae) is left hurt, angry and full of questions. After finding a photograph tucked away in a safe deposit box, Mae goes on a journey to discover her mother’s early life.
Along the way, she finds herself in an unexpected romance with a rising star journalist, Michael Block (LaKeith Stanfield), who is looking to do a story on her mother. As Mae delves further into her mother's past with Michael's help, she begins to find parallels between her mother and herself that begin to affect her blooming relationship with Michael.
