Brilliantly done. A stunningly beautiful film that will leave you breathless. A must see film.
Absolutly amazing! There were some things I think they shouldn`t have changed from the stage production but neverthe less a complete masterpiece! I`ve loved it since I was 8 years old when I saw it in Toronto and it was everything I hoped it would be!
one word. Phantastic. i watched it for 5 times and the water works get worse each time. yuppers.
Fan bloody tastic!!!!!!!! Gerard Butler was gorgeous as the phantom and i would have chosen him over roule any day, and he has a fantastic singing voice. I went to see it 3 times at the cinema and will be buying the dvd
First off I would just like to say to the SOPHISTICATE....how snobby are you, some people live in areas that are too far to be able to see the stage production....how dare you imply that you are better than others.... Secondly, to the person who said that the Phantom never threatened to kill Raoul, uh...I think you need to listen to the last 15 minutes of the play again, of course he does, that is the whole climax at the end!!! That said, this movie was very well done, I was aprehensive since the stage production is my absolute favourite show of all time and I was afraid the movie would not do it justice but I got those same chills.....well
A hauntingly beautiful film that will please it`s millions of "Phan`s". The sets, the costumes and the music are all spellbinding. Highly recommended.
An extraordinary movie musical. It stayed true to the original stage show and the movie is brilliantly done. The cast does a great job with the material and Emmy Rossum gives an Oscar calibre performance. Sumptuous sets, colourful costumes, an attractive cast and glorious music. This is a perfect musical film and the millions of fans will not be disappointed.
Having seen the show 3 times in Toronto before production was stopped, the most memorable of times being the last 2 when Paul Stanley of KISS fame was playing the Phantom role, I must say, the movie blew me away! Butler was stunning as Phantom, evoking just the right amount of sensuality and pathos, and his voice was divine! I own the original London cast recording, but Michael Crawford is a bit too wooden for my tastes. Butler was perfect for the role, bringing emotion to the songs that had moved me before. I had chills. I cried... and I can`t wait for this one to come out on DVD!
The fantastic music gave me chills!
Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! Such a terrific portrayal. I am pleased that it stayed true to the stage version of the musical. I hope everyone goes to see it because it is so magical and passionate. I had chills those whole time. It is a must! I give it 5 stars!
Loved it, I have returned to see this film three times within a fortnight (have never revisited a film previously) with various friends/relatives and would quite happily do so again. The singing is superb, excellent choice of Gerard Butler in his role as the Phantom, his portrayal really touched me. As a whole this film is spectacular and unfogettable (literally haunting).
This movie was absoulutely amazing. You do have to like the music to apreciate it, but if you do-what a film it was!
I`ve been a Phantom fan for years...the music, live performance, etc. I was hesitant when I found out there would be a movie...Well, I`ve seen it now twice, purchased the CD, and am thinking about going again. VERY WELL DONE! One of the best movies I`ve seen. I haven`t witnessed people in the theatre so mesmerized in years by the time it was over! Hat`s off to all who played part in the movie!
Despite critic reviews, I`ve found Gerard Butler as the Phantom quite appealing and refreshing. He added so much more pizzaz than I`m sure many if any actors could. As a movie-goer, I expect and hope that Butler wins an Oscar for this heart-wrenching performance. Very well done, 5 stars!
What a fantastic film! The costumes, the music, the acting... it was all so fabulous! My friends and I all loved it and cried at the end... truly a moving and inspiring movie. It just appalls me that such a pointless, stupid movie like "Spongebob Squarepants" would get a higher rating than this masterpiece. Take it from me... you will NOT regret taking that free Friday night to see this!!!
Very well done! The movie conveyed the mystery and the attraction that drew Christine to the Phantom. The enigma and pull of the Phantom to one`s emotions. It`s like how you felt when you first fall in love, your whole being being pulled into sweet insanity.
I am without a doubt the biggest Phantom of the opera fan, having seen the play nurmerous times and have read both Gaston Leorux`s book, as well as the independt book by Susan Kay which goes through the Phatoms entire life, birth till death, ( it is where the movie got the phantoms backgroud i.s gypsy capture) I would have to say that while the movie was visually stunning and did a remarkable job... the characters were not quite captured in the intensity intended by both Leroux, Webber and Kay. Both actors playing christine and phantom were with a doubt talented... but I still feel that their performances were a little dissapointing. And I
This film stayed true to the stage musical, and to the story. I had the opportunity to see the musical 3 times since they stopped production in Toronto, and will always remain a fan of this phenomenal story. I am looking forward to when this film will be released on dvd, so that I can enjoy it with my children who did not have the opprtunity to see it musical in person.
In a word - awesome! Emmy Rossum is exquisite and Gerard Butler a very effective and sexy phantom! The production is outstanding!
Very good. The music, scenery, and costumes were excellent. Drags a bit during the middle, but the overall effort makes this movie one of the best I`ve seen in 2004. (4 stars)
It was amazing!!I loved it soo much!! I`m going to see it again tomorrow!!
I thought the movie was delicious! I went out and bought both the soundtrack for the original london production and for the movie. Although Michael Crawford has an edge in being classically trained for opera, Gerard had more depth of emotion in his. In fact, I prefer Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler over Sarah Brighton and Michael Crawford. Their voices are sexier and convey more emotion.
This is definately my favorite movie. It was beautiful and touching. It is the first movie that has brought me to tears. All three of the eleads did an excellent job but I thought Gerard Butler was by far the best. I love his singing and his acting was superb. I didn`t see Gerard Butler acting on screed, I saw the Phantom. I can`d understand why so many critics have bashed it. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes musicals, or really anyone that just likes a good story.
A great movie for someone who doesn`t have to oppertunity to see the play. Wonderful music, visually bewitching.
I think this is the best movie ever. I will be seeing it many times in the theatre. I got chills when i first heard the main music.
It was a wonderful remake of the stage preformance. It gave so much more then the stage only left to our imaginations
I`ve seen the play a few times and LOVE the music. But I wasn`t sure if the "feeling" of the play would be lost on the Big screen. I was suprized at how much I enjoyed the movie. The sets were terrific, the music was beautiful..The acting and singing from all the cast was wonderful..And I really enjoyed Raoul(Patrick Wilson) his voice was great, he was very believable(Great looking and sexy too). Minnie Driver was very funny and gave life to what could be a very stale character.I had a hard time with the Phantom having such a sensual pull on Christine because of his violence...I STILL Don`t get why the Dwarf was there... I`ll see movie this aga
"Phantom" was lush and lavish and beautiful. But I was voting for the Phantom to win! Gerard Butler is lush and lavish and beautiful. Hollywood ought to hop on him--he`s hot.
Great movie...The Phantom (Gerhard Butler) was magnificent is his role. I also loved to see how the theatre and surrounding area of Paris was portrayed in this movie.
Gerard Butler was incredible. His voice speaks to the soul, and his eyes haunt you.
It was a fabulous rendition of the theatre production - wonderful cinematography and enchanting costumes. Emmy Rossum is gorgeous as Christine with such a hauntingly lovely voice like an angle`s. Gerard Butler has just the right combination of manliness and vulnerability as the Phantom to make many women consider spending their time in the magic of the night.
Loved it! Did a wonderful job of putting the story together.. the way it should be.. it had to be hard to get it off the stage and into the big screen and to get it just right.
I didnt really like it and would not recommend it as i thought it was boring and i feel asleep a few times throughout the entire movie
I absolutely loved this movie and can`t wait to purchase the DVD! Bravo! (*****)
the music was amazing, and it sent chills down my spine
WOW What great movie. Well it is the best of Britan and Brodway put into movie form. GO SEE IT YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE SPECIAL EFFECTS. WOW Fabulous. Everyone was fantastic acting and singing.
Simply Perfect!!!
I loved this movie. At first I was really hesitant to watch, but this movie was soo good, I had to watch it twice. The music is awesome! Emmy deserves awards! Gerard Butler was soo good too!!!
OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME I LOVED PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD ITS MY LIKE ALTIME FAVOURITE MAN, I LOVE THE SINGING AND COSTUMES AND THE PAHANTOM IS SOOOOOOO HOTT!
Wonderful movie! The cinematography, music, singing and acting were excellent. I hope this movie gets the nominations and awards it richly deserves.
visually stunning and heartbreakingly romantic. The best movie I`ve seen in awhile
Really enjoyed the movie. Have seen it 2x, will go back again. Some flaws in the production-most noticeable the sword fighting sequence. Should have used a double for Butler. Otherwise wonderful. My favorite pieces from the stage production were `All I ask of You` and `Music of the Night`. Now I`ve fallen for Butler`s rendition of `Past the Point of No Return`.
needed more emotion and less lip sync
We loved the Stage production, but the movie with its greater scope was just incredible. Though many of the cast were not well known, they were good. Minnie Driver`s roll was great ; I didnt recognize her. It is a movie to be seen on the big screen and the music raises the hairs on your neck!!! Definitely 5 stars.
it was ok.... not the best but OK
Gerard Butler was the perfect Phantom. He captured the emotion and character perfectly. He was by far my favorite character in the entire movie.
In response to the person who said nobody sings it like Sarah Brightman. With all due respect, but Rebecca Caine sings it, and sang it, like no other...bar none.
i have seen the phantom of the opera on stage about ten years ago and enjoyed it very much. saw it three times in toronto. then went to the show this afternoon, december 31 2004,, i enjoyed seeing and listening to Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler .. this movie will be a classic years to come....
The movie was probably excellent for those who have not bothered to see the play. Sophisticates, like myself, who`ve seen the play were disappointed by the muted spectacle presented in the film. See the play if you can afford it, you won`t be disappointed!
I found this movie absolutly amazing!!!! Best movie I have ever seen, the actors and music were wonderful. I recommend everyone to see this fantastic movie!
