Emilia Woolf (Natalie Portman) wants nothing more than to love and be loved. And as the blushing new bride of a high-powered New York lawyer (Scott Cohen), you'd think she'd have it made in the shade. But life has just delivered the young hopeful a crushing blow: She's just lost her newborn daughter, possibly due to Emilia's own carelessness.
She must also shoulder the burden of a dark secret, her father's surreptitious affair with a stripper, and cope with the constant interferences of her new husband's angry, jealous ex-wife.
As Emilia struggles to make peace with her bright new stepson William (Charlie Tahan), she's wounded by his insensitivity... yet soon finds their playful exchanges help her develop a sense of humor about her circumstances.
