Based in part on a novel by Vasily Grossman and on a previous stage production by director Frederick Wiseman, this film follows a Jewish doctor, Anna Semionova (Catherine Samie), who is awaiting her grim fate: the Nazis are about to storm her Ukrainian ghetto and ship its residents to concentration camps.
Dr. Semionova devotes her final hours to composing a letter to her son expressing her love for him and her renewed embrace of her Jewish heritage, as well as her fear of dying.
