Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr), a spinster, applies for a job as a governess, despite a lack of experience. The man of the house has custody of his young, orphaned niece Flora (Pamela Franklin) and nephew Miles, but likes to travel. He hires her on the spot.
Miles (Martin Stephens) is initially away at boarding school, but returns when he's expelled for being a bad influence. However, Miss Giddens finds both Miles and Flora charming and grows fond of them. Over time, she notices them behaving oddly. She begins to believe that the house is haunted and that the two children are possessed by the ghosts of a former servant and his lover.
