The Canadian Shield, between Ontario and Quebec, is where three-quarters of the mineral production in the country takes place. It was here in the late 19th century that deposits of nickel, silver, gold and copper were found. Large mining companies, often foreign, who derive huge profits from the various natural resources, have settled in, even creating cities with the activity concentrated around the mines. But the operating system is far from being a source of fulfillment for allas the mining companies rake in enormous profits at the expense of the environment and workers' health. As they denounce these practices, filmmakers Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie present a complete history of mining in Canada, from its origins to the present.
