Based upon the novel by Henry James, the film is set in Italy and England in 1904. It's the tale of an American art collector (Nolte) and his daughter (Beckinsale) who travel throughout Europe.
They're befriended by the socialite Mrs. Assingham who attempts to wed each of them off, to a friend (Thurman) of the daughter, and to an Italian prince (Northam), respectively. As might be inspected in a Henry James social drama, there is however intrigue beneath the surface of these arrangements...
