A young Russian General uses birds to set fire to Moscow and save his country, which has been taken over by Napoleon. He becomes a national hero but years later, the memory of the flaming birds haunts him. So he adopts a dog with exceptional gifts and names him Bonaparte in the memory of his old enemy.
The General’s nightmares soon give way to fairy tale-like dreams, inspiring the old man to want to release all the caged birds of Saint-Petersbourg. And thanks to Bonaparte, all the dogs of the city leave their masters to gather on the cold river in order to demand the birds’ freedom.
But the layer of ice threatens to break and sweep the dogs away, forcing the old General to come to their aid.
