French Canadian flower seller Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) meets Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen) in San Francisco and agrees to travel with him to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, where they start a life together. Vivienne waits tables in a tavern and Holger builds barns.
They're separated when Holger decides to joing the Union army during the Civil War, which leaves Vivienne to fend for herself in a place controlled by corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) and his business partner, rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garret Dillahunt). Jeffries' violent, wayward son, Weston (Solly McLeod) pursues Vivienne, who has to fend off his advances.
