When Frannie Langton (Karla-Simone Spence) is brought from her native Jamaica to London in 1826 by her master, John Langton (Steven Mackintosh), she is given to George Benham (Stephen Campbell Moore) and his family, where she will work as a servant, much to her dismay. Having been educated in Jamaica, where she learned to read, she'd hoped for something better.
However, she soon discovers a kindred spirit in Benham's wife, Madame Marguerite Benham (Sophie Cookson) and the two form a bond. When Benham and his wife are found murdered, Frannie is believed to be the guilty party and is arrested.
Based on the novel by Sara Collins, who also adapted it for this television mini-series.
