Esmee (Zoe Saldaña), who works as an exotic dancer in a seedy bar in Mexico to support her abuela, is threatened by gunpoint by a member of the Cartel. While trying to defend herself, she accidentally shoots and kills him. Realizing her only change to stay alive is to escape to the United States, she goes on the run where she comes across a little girl whose mother has been kidnapped and sold by human traffickers.

Shipp (Garrett Hedlund), an American border patrol agent for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, struggles with the moral dilemmas of border security when he falls for Yadira (Adria Arjona), an undocumented woman living in Texas with her young son.
