When nine-year-old Maya Kowalski was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016, nothing could have prepared her or her family for what they were about to go through. As the medical team tried to understand her rare illness, they began to question whether Maya's illness was caused by her mother Beata, believing the symptoms to be a sign of Munchausen's syndrome by proxy.
Suddenly, Maya was in state custody and her parents Jack and Beata were not allowed to see her – Beata wasn't even allowed to see her via video chat or talk to her by phone. Desperate to bring their daughter home, they took the news hard. The story of the Kowalski family – as told in their own words – may change the way you look at children’s healthcare forever.
