The film Song Sung Blue is based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a married couple from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, whose shared passion for music transformed their lives. Performing under the stage name Lightning & Thunder, Mike and Claire built a devoted local following with their heartfelt renditions of Neil Diamond and Patsy Cline classics. Their tribute act wasn’t just about the music — it was about bringing joy and connection to the small clubs, festivals, and community events where they performed.

The Sardinas’ story was first documented in Greg Kohs’ 2008 award-winning documentary Song Sung Blue, which revealed the deeply personal journey behind the applause. Offstage, Mike and Claire faced challenges that would have broken many. Financial difficulties often strained the couple, and Mike’s battle with cancer added additional hardship for the couple. In 1996, Claire was tragically hit by a car while mowing the lawn, resulting in the amputation of one of her legs. Yet, despite physical and emotional setbacks, she returned to the stage, her powerful voice and indomitable spirit making her a symbol of resilience in the Milwaukee community.

The couple's unwavering dedication to each other and their music earned them recognition beyond Wisconsin. They opened for artists like Pearl Jam and were embraced by a growing fan base who admired not only their talent but also their perseverance. Through the highs and lows, Lightning & Thunder became more than a tribute act — they were a reminder of the power of love, music, and hope.

Lightning & Thunder’s story ended on a bittersweet note. Despite their determination to keep performing after Claire’s devastating accident and Mike’s battle with cancer, tragedy struck the duo in 2006. Mike Sardina, who had been living with cancer for several years, passed away at the age of 48. His death took a large toll on Claire and the Milwaukee community. Claire, who had already endured so much, found herself struggling without her husband and musical partner. She performed occasionally but after Mike passed it was never the same.

Claire lived quietly in Milwaukee for a few more years, but in 2017 she sadly passed away at the age of 58, although the exact cause of death was never publicly disclosed. The loss of both Mike and Claire marked the end of Lightning & Thunder.
