John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is serving time in a federal prison when the U.S. military learns that Americans are being held as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. Rambo's former superior, Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna), releases Rambo to go on a top-secret mission to bring the POWs back to America. Rambo's current superior, Marshall Murdok (Charles Napier), assigns Rambo to take pictures of where the POWs are being held, but under no circumstances is he to bring any back.
Fearing that Murdok has ulterior motives, Rambo knows he needs to get all the POWs out of Vietnam and back to America. With the help of Vietnamese freedom fighter Co Bao (Julia Nickson), Rambo embarks on a mission to save all captured Americans from Captain Vinh (William Ghent) and Lieutenant Colonel Padovsky (Steven Berkoff).
