Helen, a hotel maid who lives in a small Corsican village, becomes enthralled when she witnesses an American tourist playing chess with her husband. A wife and mother of a 15-year-old girl, Helen suddenly develops a passion for the game. She offers her husband an electronic chessboard for his birthday, but he doesnt share her passion, so she plays the game alone, completely obsessed to the point of neglecting her family and her work.
Tired of playing herself each night, she asks a widowed doctor, whose house she cleans, to help her perfect her skills. Soon, their relationship has the inhabitants of the village talking about them, but her natural talent lead sher to a chance at a championship and a new shot at life.
