Benjamin, a dramatic arts professor in Paris, learns that he has pancreatic cancer. He has, at the most, 12 months to live. At first in denial, the 40-year-old refuses to undergo chemotherapy treatment. But when his condition worsens, Benjamin is forced to interrupt his work and resigns himself to entering the hospital, under the care of benevolent Doctor Eddé, an oncologist whose mission is to alleviate the suffering of his incurable patients. Over the next few weeks, Benjamin's assistant and Benjamin's helpless mother try to help him find serenity.
